What Great White Sharks Can Teach Small Business Owners About Success

Every July, I watch Shark Week—and every July, I cheer for the seal. Somewhere between those breathtaking great white shark breaches, I realized there are powerful lessons every small business owner can learn about preparation, strategy, resilience, and long-term success. Here are eight business lessons inspired by Shark Week.

Every July, you’ll find me watching Shark Week.

And every July, you’ll also find me cheering for the seal.

While there are plenty of fascinating episodes, my favorites are the ones featuring marine biologist and cinematographer Andy Casagrande capturing footage of great white sharks breaching.

If you’ve never seen a breach, it’s one of nature’s most incredible displays of power.

A great white shark—sometimes weighing well over 3,000 pounds—launches its entire body completely out of the water in pursuit of a seal. It’s an astonishing combination of strength, speed, agility, timing, and precision.

But what makes it even more impressive is that the breach isn’t random.

The shark has spent time observing.

It understands where its prey is likely to be.

It positions itself beneath the surface.

It waits patiently.

Then, when the moment is right, it commits with everything it has.

Watching those scenes always leaves me amazed.

Confession Time…

As much as I admire the great white shark, I have to admit…

I’m always rooting for the seal.

Every. Single. Time.

Maybe it’s because I naturally cheer for the underdog.

I see the seal fighting to survive against overwhelming odds, and I can’t help but hope it escapes.

Interestingly, that’s exactly how I feel about small business owners.

Every day they’re competing against larger companies with bigger budgets, more employees, and more resources.

They’re balancing payroll, taxes, bookkeeping, cash flow, customer service, hiring, compliance, and countless other responsibilities.

They’re working hard just to keep moving forward.

I want them to succeed.

That’s why I do what I do.

While Shark Week celebrates one of nature’s greatest predators, my passion is helping small businesses become stronger, more confident, and better prepared for whatever challenges come their way.

Ironically, many of the lessons we can learn from the shark are exactly the lessons that help the seal survive.

As a CPA and business advisor, I see these same principles play out every day.

Here are eight business lessons we can take from Shark Week.

1. Prepare for Your Moment

The breach itself lasts only a second or two.

What you don’t see is everything that happened beforehand.

The shark spent time locating its target.

It adjusted its position.

It waited for exactly the right conditions.

Then it committed completely.

Business success works much the same way.

People often celebrate the company that lands a major contract or experiences rapid growth.

What they don’t see are the years spent building systems, strengthening financial processes, developing relationships, learning from mistakes, and improving one decision at a time.

The “overnight success” is almost always years in the making.

As Louis Pasteur famously said: “Chance favors the prepared mind.”

Preparation creates opportunity.

2. Don’t Chase Every Opportunity

Great white sharks don’t waste energy chasing everything that moves.

Successful businesses shouldn’t either.

Not every customer is your ideal customer.

Not every project is profitable.

Not every opportunity moves your business closer to your long-term goals.

One of the smartest business decisions you’ll ever make is learning when to say no.

Focusing on the right clients allows you to provide exceptional service, build stronger relationships, and create a healthier, more profitable business.

Sometimes the opportunities you decline are just as important as the ones you accept.

3. Know Your Territory

Different species of sharks thrive in different environments.

Businesses do too.

The companies that stand out aren’t trying to be everything to everyone.

They’re known for solving specific problems for specific clients.

Whether your expertise is construction, healthcare, professional services, retail, manufacturing, or another niche, becoming known for your specialty builds trust and generates referrals.

Your niche isn’t a limitation. It’s your competitive advantage.

4. Keep Moving Forward

Many sharks must continue swimming to survive.

Businesses also need momentum.

Marketing shouldn’t begin only when business slows down.

Successful business owners consistently:

  • Build relationships
  • Improve systems
  • Learn new skills
  • Stay visible in their community
  • Invest in their people
  • Refine their processes

Small improvements made consistently create remarkable results over time.

Momentum isn’t built overnight.

It’s built one decision at a time.

5. Monitor Your Financial Numbers Before Small Problems Become Big Ones

One of the shark’s greatest strengths is its ability to detect subtle changes in its environment long before danger becomes obvious.

Business owners should develop that same awareness.

Instead of waiting until tax season, review your financial reports every month.

Pay close attention to:

  • Profit & Loss Statements
  • Balance Sheets
  • Cash Flow Statements
  • Accounts Receivable Aging
  • Gross Profit Margins
  • Budget vs. Actual Results
  • Job Costing (when applicable)

These reports tell the story behind your business.

They often reveal slowing collections, shrinking margins, rising expenses, or tightening cash flow long before they become major problems.

When you understand your numbers, you have time to respond—not simply react.

6. Adapt to Changing Conditions

Sharks have survived for more than 400 million years because they’ve adapted.

Business owners face changing conditions every day.

  • Technology evolves
  • Customer expectations change
  • Economic conditions fluctuate
  • Tax laws change

The businesses that continue learning, improving, and adapting are usually the ones still thriving years later.

Success belongs to businesses that are willing to evolve.

7. Make Decisions Based on Facts, Not Fear

Every business experiences uncertainty.

  • A large customer leaves
  • Sales slow
  • Unexpected expenses arise

The most successful business owners don’t panic.

They gather information, review the numbers, and evaluate their options.

Then they make informed decisions based on facts—not fear.

That’s one of the greatest benefits of accurate bookkeeping and timely financial reporting.

Reliable financial information creates confident decision-making.

8. Healthy Businesses Need Accountability

Sharks play an essential role in maintaining healthy ocean ecosystems.

Healthy businesses also need accountability.

Someone should regularly ask questions like:

  • Why are receivables increasing?
  • Why has gross profit changed?
  • Why is cash flow tightening?
  • Are expenses growing faster than revenue?
  • Are we pricing our products or services appropriately?
  • Are we measuring the right Key Performance Indicators?

Those conversations often uncover opportunities long before they become expensive problems.

That’s where bookkeeping becomes much more than recording transactions.

Understanding your financial information allows you to make smarter business decisions.

That’s also where Client Advisory Services can make a real difference—turning financial reports into meaningful conversations that help business owners plan, improve, and grow.

Final Thoughts

Every time I watch Andy Casagrande capture a great white shark breaching, I’m amazed by those few seconds of explosive power.

But I know the real story isn’t the breach.

It’s everything that happened before it.

The patience.

The positioning.

The preparation.

The discipline.

Successful businesses are built exactly the same way.

Most people only notice the breakthrough.

The business that doubles its revenue.

The company that lands the major contract.

The entrepreneur who seems to become an overnight success.

What they don’t see are the months—or years—spent building accurate financial systems, understanding the numbers, strengthening operations, developing relationships, and making hundreds of smart decisions along the way.

The breakthrough is simply the visible result of consistent preparation.

Every Shark Week, I’ll still find myself hoping the seal gets away.

But I’ll also continue admiring the preparation, precision, patience, and discipline of the great white shark.

As business owners, we don’t have to choose between the two.

We can cheer for the small business while learning from one of nature’s greatest strategists.

At Melton Bookkeeping & Accounting Services, I believe bookkeeping is about much more than recording yesterday’s transactions.

It’s about helping business owners understand today’s numbers so they can make better decisions about tomorrow.

Whether that means improving cash flow, understanding profitability, strengthening internal processes, or gaining strategic insight through Client Advisory Services, my goal is to help business owners become more prepared, more resilient, and more successful.

Because in business, just like in nature…

Preparation often determines who survives—and who thrives.
